Endodontic Posts
Endodontic Posts – Tools Enabling Precise Reconstruction of the Affected Tooth
After a root canal treatment, teeth become more fragile and require additional support to withstand chewing forces. This is where the dental post comes in, inserted into the root canal to stabilize the dental reconstruction and allow for the placement of a dental crown or other types of restorations. The materials used for posts can vary, from metals and metal alloys to more modern materials such as fiberglass or carbon fiber, which offer superior aesthetics and better biocompatibility.
There are two main categories of endodontic posts: prefabricated posts and custom-cast posts. Prefabricated posts come in various sizes and shapes, allowing for quick and efficient adaptation to the root canal. Custom-cast posts are made to order, fitting perfectly to the patient’s root canal shape.
Dental Post – Step by Step Toward a Healthy, Complete, and Pain-Free Smile
Inserting an endodontic post involves several delicate steps that require the use of specialized dental consumables. After cleaning the root canal, the dentist selects an appropriate post based on the length and diameter of the canal. In this process, cotton rolls are often used to isolate the treated tooth from the rest of the oral cavity, maintaining a dry, uncontaminated workspace. Once the canal is isolated, the dentist places the post into the prepared root canal, using a micro-applicator with special dental adhesive or endodontic cement.
After the post is applied, the next step is restoring the tooth. This often involves placing a dental crown, which protects the treated tooth and provides aesthetics suited to the patient’s oral morphology and facial features.
