MEDICAL SURGICAL SUTURES
Surgical Sutures – A Critical Step During Surgery
Surgical sutures are essential for patient healing after surgical procedures. They are used to close incisions and wounds, facilitating the healing process and reducing the risk of infections. Just like surgical instruments, sutures are extremely important and should not be underestimated, as they directly contribute to patient recovery and the success of medical interventions.
There are several types of surgical sutures, each used depending on the type of tissue and the nature of the procedure. Sutures can be classified into two main categories: absorbable and non-absorbable.
Surgical Sutures – Necessary for Successful Procedures
Firstly, absorbable surgical sutures are made from materials that gradually break down and are absorbed by the body over time. These are mainly used for internal tissues, where no further intervention is needed for their removal. The advantage of these sutures is that they eliminate the need for a second procedure for removal, thus reducing patient discomfort and the risk of postoperative complications.
On the other hand, non-absorbable surgical sutures are made from materials that do not break down in the body, such as nylon, polyester, or polypropylene. These are used to close the skin, and tissues requiring long-term support, or in cases where it is important to monitor the healing and condition of the sutures. These need to be removed after some time, once the wound has sufficiently healed, usually during a follow-up consultation.
